Building a Career in Home Care

For some people this job is a stopgap. For a lot of others, it turns into an actual career, with room to grow, once they know what to look for.

The St. Louis skyline

A lot of people land in caregiving without planning to and end up staying for years, sometimes without quite meaning to. The ones who build an actual career out of it, rather than just a job they keep showing up for, tend to do a few things differently.

Certifications open doors, and they're worth it

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is the most common next step, and it usually means more responsibility, more client types you can work with, and a better hourly rate. Beyond CNA, specialty training in dementia care or post-hospital recovery makes you the person an agency calls first for its more complex cases, which tends to come with steadier hours.

Staying with the same clients pays off in ways that aren't just about money

Caregivers who bounce between agencies chasing slightly better rates often end up with less stable schedules than the ones who stay somewhere and build real relationships with clients and coordinators. Familiarity works in your favor: clients request you by name, coordinators think of you first for the shifts you actually want, and a track record like that is worth more over time than an extra dollar an hour somewhere new.

There's a path beyond direct care, if you want it

Plenty of caregivers are happy doing hands-on work for their whole career, and that's a completely legitimate choice. For others, a few years of solid direct care experience opens the door to training newer caregivers, taking on scheduling or coordination work, or using the experience as a foundation for nursing school later. None of that happens by accident. It usually starts with being reliable enough, long enough, that someone notices.

If you're looking for somewhere that treats this like the career it can be, we're hiring across Greater St. Louis, and we'd rather invest in caregivers who want to grow than churn through people who don't stick around.
